Kerala in mourning as Sabarimala toll mounts to 104

As grieving relatives thronged hospitals to identify their kin among the dead in Kerala's Sabarimala tragedy, which has claimed 104 lives so far, a government report Saturday said the stampede in the Pulumedu forest was caused after a tiff between taxi, autorickshaw drivers and pilgrims turned violent.Meanwhile, Kerala has declared three days of mourning as more bodies were brought to hospitals. Nearly 60 people are said to be injured.

The stampede occurred around 8 p.m. Friday when the pilgrims were returning after watching the celestial Makara Jyothi light, the most important event of the three-month pilgrimage, from a hillock some 30 km from the Sabarimala temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in Pathanamthitta district. The tragedy took place in Pulumedu, a forested area about 10 km from the Vandiperiyar town.A report by the state forest department says a tiff between autorickshaw, taxi drivers and pilgrims turned violent, leading to the stampede.

The report says a huge crowd had gathered at the Pulumedu hillock to witness the Makara Jyothi. After seeing the light, some of the devotees got into an autorickshaw to go back to Vandiperiyar as the driver was charging less than the jeeps being run as taxis. This sparked off a tiff between the auto and jeep drivers and some devotees too joined in. The argument turned ugly when some angry pilgrims smashed the windscreens of the jeeps, leading to panic that caused the stampede, the report said.A witness said the road leading to the hillock was narrow and the crowds returning were huge and unmanageable.

The policemen were few to handle the commotion. The bodies were first brought to the Vandiperiyar government hospital and from there they was moved to the government hospital in Kumily in Idukki district, nearly 15 km from the accident site, where a team of 60 doctors conducted autopsies.Several grieving devotees tried to identify their near and dear ones among the dead while others tended to the injured. More than 70 victims have been identified, of them one was from Sri Lanka, 29 from Tamil Nadu, 25 from Karnataka, 16 from Andhra Pradesh, three from Kerala, hospital authorities said.Earlier, state Finance Minister Thomas Isaac, who visited the Kumily hospital said that a jeep had lost control and rammed into some pilgrims when over a lakh people were returning to the base, leading to the chaos.Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who arrived in Kumily on a naval helicopter, announced a state holiday Saturday and a three-day mourning.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called Achuthanandan Saturday morning to convey his grief. He also sanctioned a relief of Rs.1 lakh each to the kin of those killed and Rs.50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, PMO sources in New Delhi said.Achuthanandan said the Kerala government would also announce compensation to the kin of the dead and the injured.Finance Minister Isaac had said the state government will meet the expenses for treating the injured."A thorough investigation will be done and the state government will meet all the expenses for transporting the bodies to their homes. As the first step, a sum of Rs.5,000 to the injured has been sanctioned," said Isaac.Calling it a national tragedy, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said he had directed the defence forces to see that all help is provided.State Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi also visited the Kumily Government hospital. The Sabarimala temple is in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, situated on the Western Ghat ranges at an altitude of 914 metres above the sea level, four kilometres uphill from the river Pampa.Pamba, the base camp to the Sabarimala temple, has been overflowing with pilgrims since the past few days. The sighting of the Makara Jyothi celestial flame on the horizon marks the finale of the three-month-long pilgrim season at the mountain shrine.

KIAL.......

Corporate group chief protests over Kerala CM’s remark. Leela Group chairman Captain Krishnan Nair has strongly protested Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan’s statement that no ‘big shark’ like him would be allowed to hijack the Kannur international airport project. This has come even as the CM’s office clarified that all applicants would get shares in it provided they applied for a minimum of 2001 shares with a face value of Rs 100. “He has been behaving in a manner unbecoming his position. He’s so narrow-minded that no major project will take off during his regime. Believe me, no progress is going to be made in the project for the next three months and it is going to go the SmartCity way,”Nair said yesterday while reacting to the chief minister’s statement. Achuthanandan had the other day made it clear that individual investors would get priority while offering Kannur International Airport Limited’s (KIAL) shares and “no big sharks would be allowed to swallow the project” by securing majority stake.
The state government’s stake is limited to 26%, leaving 25% to public sector enterprises and 49% to the public to subscribe. A meeting of the company’s board of directors chaired by the chief minister had initially decided to offer 16% each to the Leela group, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) and the Mumbai-based Mennen group and offer the remaining 1% to the public. Krishnan Nair also went on record saying he was already in talks with major players like the Changi airport for designing and building of the greenfield airport. The issue also figured in the Kerala Assembly when opposition legislator PC George questioned the decision not to give the general public, especially the Non-Resident Indians (NRI) who constitute bulk of the airport users, an opportunity to invest in the infrastructure project.

.“Surprises happen in football.”

Doha: India coach Bob Houghton admitted he is short on firepower for their opening AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ Group C game after Sushil Kumar Singh joined fellow striker Baichung Bhutia on the sidelines for Monday's clash with Australia but insisted his players are determined to make the most of their experience at the continent’s premier tournament.

While Bhutia has been battling a long-standing calf injury, Singh was only ruled out on Sunday morning after it transpired the red card he received in last year's AFC Challenge Cup game against DPR Korea means he is suspended for India's first two games.

“We were not aware that the red card prohibited him from playing in this tournament so that was a blow for us,” said Houghton, who will call up Mohammed Rafique in place of Singh.

“We've lost one front player through injury and another through suspension so that's left us with a bit of a problem.”India's task, on paper at least, is a daunting one as they try to plot a course through a group that also features Korea Republic and Bahrain.Nevertheless, the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup winners intend to enjoy their time in Doha, however long it lasts.

“We're very happy to be here, it's the first time in nearly 30 years India have been in a major competition. I think it's a big achievement to get here,” added former China and Uzbekistan boss Houghton.

“When we qualified nearly 18 months ago we knew this would be a tough competition. It's a tough group so we're under no illusions.“The important thing is the boys enjoy it. We can play without too much pressure and it's important they play well, work 100% and we'll see where that leads us.“The only mitigation is that we have a lot of injuries but that's part and parcel of it. We have lost a couple of important players.“At the moment we're trying to get out captain fit for maybe the third game of the tournament. Baichung is a big influence on this team, he's been a fantastic servant for Indian football and we want to give him every opportunity to take part in this tournament.

“We expect to use all our players in these three games and it will be a great experience and I hope it will raise the profile of football in India.”First up are the Socceroos, a side packed with world-class talent, but Houghton insisted his side would not be overawed by their more illustrious opponents.“We'll approach this game the way we approach all games, we'll go out there and try to win, feel confident about our own ability, play the way we want to play and work as hard as we can to win the game,” insisted the Englishman.

Pravasi Divas for Indians?

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9th January every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever.

PBD conventions are being held every year since 2003. These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities. These conventions are also very useful in networking among the overseas Indian community residing in various parts of the world and enable them to share their experiences in various fields.
During the event, individuals of exceptional merit are honoured with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to appreciate their role in India’s growth. The event also provides a forum for discussing key issues concerning the overseas Indian community.
